Isaura Hern\u00e1ndez\u00a0Navarro arrived to\u00a0Finland from Costa\u00a0Rica in January\u00a02013. For the past\u00a0year she has been\u00a0living in Vantaa and\u00a0working as an ICYEvolunteer\u00a0in a Finnish\u00a0kindergarten. What\u00a0does a regular day in\u00a0Vantaa look like from\u00a0a Costa Rican point of\u00a0view?<\/p>\n

Last year I was living my regular life in\u00a0Costa Rica: waking up early for school,\u00a0doing homework, seeing my friends.\u00a0But then I got an opportunity to make a\u00a0change and to experience the\u00a0world; I decided to come to\u00a0Finland as a volunteer of the\u00a0ICYE program.I can still recall\u00a0the feelings I had on the\u00a0very first day \u2013 it was a really\u00a0big change. When I arrived in\u00a0Finland in January 2013, the\u00a0temperature here was around\u00a0-15 degrees. When I had left\u00a0from Costa Rica, it had been\u00a0about 26 degrees…<\/p>\n

The temperature and the\u00a0snow are among the first impressions\u00a0you get, those that immediately\u00a0read you to think how different things\u00a0seem. But the real challenge starts at the\u00a0volunteer project. In my case, I chose to\u00a0volunteer in a kindergarten located in\u00a0Vantaa. It is called Illusia Ilmaisup\u00e4iv\u00e4koti,\u00a0and it is a private kindergarten focused\u00a0on developing children\u2019s abilities through\u00a0music and arts.<\/p>\n

The first days in a new environment\u00a0are always a bit confusing. One of the confusing things was the language: it is an interesting\u00a0part of the Finnish culture, and\u00a0hearing it during the first weeks when\u00a0understanding only little was really fun. It\u00a0was one of the exciting challenges. Soon\u00a0I also realized that sometimes only a little\u00a0percentage of the communication\u00a0is verbal \u2013 most of it is\u00a0actually body language.<\/p>\n

As the time went by, I\u00a0started to get to know my coworkers\u00a0and the children in\u00a0the kindergarten. It was still\u00a0winter and my days started\u00a0to get more exciting: there I\u00a0was trying to ski and skate\u00a0with the kids, enjoying the\u00a0first winter months I had\u00a0ever experienced.<\/p>\n

During this year, my\u00a0perception of a regular day has slowly\u00a0changed. Now I wake up in the morning,\u00a0and in about 45 minutes I\u2019m at my workplace.\u00a0I see my co-workers who greet me\u00a0with a huge smile and a nice \u201chuomenta\u201d\u00a0(\u201dgood morning\u201d in Finnish). After that I\u00a0often go out to the yard and take part in\u00a0something the kids are doing \u2013 running,\u00a0for example. Then, before lunch, we usually\u00a0have some special activities for the\u00a0children, divided in groups by age.<\/p>\n

Pretty often we also go on small trips,\u00a0for example to the library, to museums or\u00a0to the forest nearby. The trips are always\u00a0full of learning experiences, and often I\u2019m\u00a0as excited as the kids. Then it is already\u00a0lunch time\u2026 the children help us with\u00a0it, and it is interesting to see how independent\u00a0they are already in an early age.<\/p>\n

After lunch there is time for a break and a\u00a0well-deserved nap.\u00a0After some well gained rest the day\u00a0continues with games: mathematics,\u00a0puzzles, Legos or even role plays. There\u00a0is always some time reserved for getting\u00a0to know the kids, their abilities and preferences;\u00a0very often we also have conversations\u00a0about the new Transformer characters,\u00a0Finnish cartoon series or even about\u00a0choosing the nicest hair colour for a doll\u00a0in a colouring book. It is interesting to see\u00a0in real life how does a personality start to\u00a0develop. After the games we finally have\u00a0some \u201cv\u00e4lipala\u201d or snacks for the afternoon,\u00a0and then it is time to get dressed\u00a0and go outside to spend some energy before\u00a0going home.<\/p>\n

“I have now been in Finland for almost\u00a011 months; learning, experiencing and living\u00a0in the Finnish environment. I have\u00a0learned so much, not only about the traditions\u00a0and ways of life of this country but\u00a0also about myself.”<\/p>\n

I have\u00a0learned so much, not only about the traditions\u00a0and ways of life of this country but\u00a0also about myself. Being on your own teaches\u00a0a lot you did not know before. Being\u00a0here has been one of those life experiences\u00a0I would not change for anything else.<\/p>\n

Today, the facts that I do not get lost in\u00a0my neighborhood anymore or that I can\u00a0communicate with the kids at work and\u00a0express my ideas in another language feel\u00a0really rewarding. Finland has given me\u00a0many experiences that I will treasure for\u00a0the rest of my life. I\u2019ve also met not only\u00a0new friends, but people I could call my\u00a0family.<\/p>\n

So, at the end of this period, I\u2019m asking\u00a0myself: what will a regular day be like in\u00a0my new life, after this? New experiences\u00a0will come, but wonderful memories will\u00a0remain.<\/p>\n
