Beyond Borders: Young People with Disabilities Volunteering Abroad

The videos were produced by Mariam Darbaidze as part of her European Solidarity Corps volunteer period (2022–23) at Maailmanvaihto.

“Every year, many young people take part in European Solidarity Corps volunteering. For people with disabilities, the process of joining international volunteering is often more difficult due to the challenges and obstacles they face in their lives.

The goal of the project is to create more knowledge about European Solidarity Corps volunteering as a young person with disabilities – for young people with disabilities interested in international volunteering, organisations hosting volunteers, and organisations coordinating and funding volunteering. In general, the project intends to promote equality of possibilities.”

European Solidarity Corps

The European Solidarity Corps is a European Union program that offers volunteer opportunities to young people across Europe. The volunteer projects cover a wide range of topics, from inclusion to environmental protection. Through Maailmanvaihto, you can go on a volunteer placement lasting 6–12 months.

With support from the European Union, volunteers’ expenses – including training, daily meals, pocket money, accommodation, and travel costs – are covered. In addition, the program offers opportunities for individualized support. This may be arranged, for example, for volunteers with physical or sensory disabilities, as well as those with chronic health conditions. Feel free to contact us and ask for more information!
