In Asia and Oceania, ICYE volunteers are received in Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. Below, you can learn about the possibilities in these countries.

In Indonesia, voluntary work is carried out in kindergartens, schools, and nursing homes. In these settings, volunteers assist with teaching, organize cultural, language, and recreational activities, and help the elderly with their daily routines, among other things. Voluntary workplaces are located on the island of Java. Volunteers live with host families or in dormitories.

In Japan, volunteers work mainly with children and young people in kindergartens and schools. Volunteering opportunities are also available in the elderly work field, among others. Volunteers live with their workplace or in a host family.

In Nepal, you can volunteer at a kindergarten or a school. At schools in particular, volunteers help with English language teaching. In addition, you can also volunteer on a farm or at a dog shelter (this new placement is not yet listed in the ICYE database). Volunteers stay with host families or in shared accommodation with other volunteers. You can volunteer in Nepal for 6 or 10 months starting from August or for 5 months starting from January.

In New Zealand, many ICYE volunteers work among children and youth, in schools and camping centers, for instance. Volunteers are welcomed also by a living community of people with disabilities, for instance. Most of the voluntary workplaces are situated on the Northern island. Accommodation in most cases at the voluntary workplace.

In South Korea, volunteers can get involved in local communities through their work with children, young people, and the elderly in welfare and activity centres. Together with community members, volunteers organise activities such as sports, arts and crafts, and English language classes. In at least one of the centres, people with and without disabilities are involved. Volunteers stay in the YMCA hotel.

In Taiwan, ICYE volunteers are hosted by schools ranging from primary to secondary level. There, the volunteers primarily take have language and cultural exchange and encourage pupils to use English. The volunteers stay either with host families or at their voluntary workplace.

In Thailand, volunteers are welcomed at schools, universities, a volunteer centre, and a rescue team (the ‘LTV’ positions in the PDF guide). In some places, volunteers stay with host families; in others, they are accommodated at their place of volunteering.
