Become a camp leader for the on-arrival camp of young volunteers 13.–19.8.2025

In August 2025, 20–25 young people will travel through Maailmanvaihto to Finland to Volunteer here for 6–12 months. We will organize for the new volunteers an on-arrival camp from 13th until 19th of August 2025 in Ylöjärvi.

We are looking for a camp leader for the on-arrival camp. As a camp leader, you will get to carry out an international camp and train your group leadership and organizational skills.

The most important responsibilities of the camp leader are:

  • planning and carrying out the program of the camp in co-operation with Maailmanvaihto’s program Coordinator and the camp team
  • coordinating the camp team and carrying out planning meetings
  • during the camp, taking care that the camp is running nicely and advancing a nice atmosphere and good interaction within and between the teams

Central themes of the camp will be familiarizing oneself with volunteering, Intercultural learning, and conflict management. At the camp, the volunteers will also familiarize themselves with the cultural environment and society in Finland. The camp will be held at the camp center Antaverka in Ylöjärvi. The camp leader will organize the camp together with the program coordinator, summer intern, and 3–5 camp facilitators who will work on a voluntary basis.

We hope that the camp leader will have good co-operation and interaction skills. We are looking for a responsible person for the task. Prior experience in training and Guiding groups as well as personal experience of living abroad will be of advantage. The camp will be held in English. Leading the camp suits well for students studying to become community educators, for example.

The camp leader will not receive a salary but half of the daily allowance. We will cover the travel expenses (from Finland) of the camp leader to the camp.

We will start planning the camp at the beginning of summer, and the team will gather about 3–4 times prior to the camp. The camp leader will work mainly remotely, but we will also have some joint planning days at the office of Maailmanvaihto which is situated in the Kruununhaka district of Helsinki. Travel expenses to the meetings will be covered (cheapest public transport). We wish that the camp leader will commit to taking part in all the planning meetings as well as the evaluation meeting after the camp.

Safer space and accessibility

We wish to build in all Maailmanvaihto’s activities an atmosphere in which all participants can feel welcome as themselves. To support this, we will follow at the camp  Maailmanvaihto’s Safer space principles.  If you would like to gain accessibility information, contact Maailmanvaihto’s program Coordinator Mari Takalo  hosting@maailmanvaihto.fi , 044 318 0888.

Andrea

”I’m Andrea from Costa Rica. Spanish is my native language, but I also speak English. I’m a social worker by profession, so I believe my greatest strengths are empathy and problem-solving. I’m also very interested in topics related to social justice. I really enjoy meeting new people, I consider myself very outgoing and active. I like going to the gym and practicing yoga, and I’m always up for new adventures. Traveling is my biggest passion; I love discovering new places, learning about different cultures, and exploring each country’s natural beauty. I chose Finland for my volunteer work because it’s a country with incredibly impressive nature. I’m also deeply impressed by everything I’ve heard about Finland’s education system and safety. I’d love to immerse myself in the lifestyle there, with the hope of one day being able to replicate some of these great practices in my own country.”

Join us at the Helsinki Pride parade and the Maailmanvaihto Pride picnic on June 28 2025!

Dear friends, Helsinki Pride is here again! Let’s celebrate diversity, march for human rights and equality at the Helsinki Pride parade and enjoy a park picnic together afterwards.

  • Saturday 28 June 2025, Helsinki
  • We’ll meet at 12 in front of the main entrance of the National Library (Unioninkatu 36)

Join us to march for diversity and equality of LGBTQIA+ people, and bring along your friends, too! This year’s theme is “Pride without Borders” underlining that everyone must have the right to freedom, pride and self-determination, no matter where they’re from.

In Maailmanvaihto’s international volunteering programmes, young people from all over the world interact with new people, cultures, and societies. As part of this, they – as well as other actors in the international volunteering field – face and perhaps live the reality of LGBTQIA+ people in different parts of the world, including the challenges they face.

We want to promote global responsibility, peace, and a more equal world through intercultural learning. As part of this, we want to be increasingly sensitive to gender and sexual diversity and the challenges faced by gender and sexual minorities in Finland and elsewhere in the world.

What?

Helsinki Pride is the largest human rights and cultural event in Finland. June is the official Pride month, culminating in Helsinki Pride week from 23–29 June 2025, with the traditional parade and Kaivopuisto picnic on Saturday June 28. Read more on the Helsinki Pride Community website: https://pride.fi/en/.

Where and when?

The parade starts from the Senate Square. We will meet on the side of the square, in front of the main entrance of the National Library (Unioninkatu 36) at 12. We will join at the end of the parade. Most probably, it will take some time for the parade to get going, so it is advisable to consider the weather conditions!

The parade route: Senate Square > Aleksanterinkatu > Mannerheimintie > Pohjois- Esplanadi > Fabianinkatu > Eteläinen Makasiinikatu > Kasarminkatu > Neitsytpolku > Kaivopuisto Park. The route of the parade is about 2,8 km long. On the website of Helsinki Pride, you can find instructions and accessibility information.

Our picnic will take place in Kaivopuisto park, where the parade ends. There we will settle down after the walk to enjoy snacks together. If you wish, you can bring a small vegan dish or drink to share. We will bring a small blanket, but bringing your own blanket or mat is also recommended.

Join us!

Welcome people of Maailmanvaihto and friends of our organization! If you would like to join us, we hope you will let us know in advance at harjoittelija@maailmanvaihto.fi so we know who to expect.

If you cannot find us, you can call or text our office intern Nicole: +358 50 346 0965. Please note, though, that it is expected that many people will join the parade and the picnic in general, due to which the connection and the audibility may be weak.
