In Africa, ICYE volunteers are received in Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa,and Tanzania.
In Ghana, ICYE volunteers are received mostly by kindergartens and schools. In addition, voluntary work is available in children’s homes, support centers for people with disablities as well as a health clinic. Accommodation at the voluntary workplace or in a host family.
In Kenya, ICYE volunteers are received especially by schools, but there are places available also e.g. in the health care field, support centers for street children, and a home for the elderly. Accommodation at the voluntary workplace or in a host family.
In Morocco, volunteers are received e.g. into organizations supporting disabled children and into centers for the elderly. Voluntary work is available also in the office of CMS, for instance. It is wished that the volunteers know French. Accommodation in most cases in a host family, in some cases at the voluntary workplace.
In Mozambique, the volunteers in most cases work among children and youth in orphanages, children’s homes, art education projects, and among street children. It is also possible to volunteer to support people with HIV and inform local communities about the virus. Accommodation in most cases in a host family.
In Nigeria, many of the ICYE volunteers work in a kindergarten or in school. Volunteers are received also by e.g. an organization of visually impaired people and the Nigerian Red Cross. Most of the voluntary workplaces are situated in the area of Lagos. Accommodation in most cases in a host family, in some cases at the voluntary workplace.
In South Africa, volunteers work mainly among children and youth – in schools, in children’s homes, and among youth with mental health problems. Voluntary work is available also in e.g. shelters for women and children. The voluntary workplaces are situated in different parts of the environment of Cape Town. Accommodation in most cases in a host family.
In Tanzania, volunteers are hosted by, for example, an organisation that runs programmes for girls and young women to develop their skills, from sewing to IT and entrepreneurship. Volunteers also work in kindergartens, schools, and an organisation that support people with disabilities, among others. Volunteers usually stay with a host family.
