Volunteering period

1.4.–31.10.2023 (7 months)

Application deadline

30th January 2023 (extended)

Location

The volunteer will mainly work at the Valona Elderly Services, which is located at the campus area of STEP Education in Pieksämäki. Pieksämäki is a small town in Eastern Finland. STEP Education is located 1,5 km away from Pieksämäki town centre. Nearby is a beautiful park, lake, and a small beach, so the location is great for a person who enjoys nature and peacefulness.

Volunteer’s role and tasks

Volunteers will work mainly at the Valona Elderly Services supporting and organising activities for the elderly people living at Valona centre. Volunteers will support the staff in organising recreational activities for the elderly people, for example, related to arts&crafts, or music, or going out for a walk. Volunteers also support the elderly during meal times and with beauty&wellness activities related to hair, hands, or feet. Volunteers can introduce their skills and interests to bring joy to the everyday life of elderly people. Volunteers will NOT have responsibility for any health-related issues (like medication or physiotherapy) and will always work in cooperation with the permanent staff members.

Volunteers will also participate in the activities of STEP Education and especially in the “Arjen Suola” group, where students with special needs study arts&crafts, music, home economics, and physical education. The aim of the studies is to support students’ personal growth and communication and teamwork skills. Volunteers will assist the teachers and instructors with organising educational activities and providing support for students with special needs. During the summertime STEP Education also organises courses and trainings for different groups of people, where volunteers can also participate and assist.

The role of the volunteer is to bring intercultural aspects to the everyday life of the Pieksämäki campus community, especially the elderly people and students with special needs, providing them a possibility for language practice and intercultural learning.

Volunteer’s profile

We are looking for a volunteer who is motivated to work with elderly people and has a respectful attitude toward them. It is important that the volunteer is open-minded and has good social and cooperation skills. Some knowledge or experience about working with elderly people or people with disabilities is an advantage, but more important is an open and positive attitude towards learning to work with these groups of people. It is also important that the volunteer is interested in supporting elderly people and people with disabilities to have good everyday life and learning experiences.

Accommodation, food, and transportation

Accommodation is provided at the student dormitory building situated in the STEP Education campus area. The volunteer will have a private room, but the kitchen, bathroom, sauna, and laundry will be shared with other volunteers and students. Most of the meals will be provided in the student restaurant. When the restaurant is closed during weekends or holidays, the volunteer will receive a food allowance. Volunteer lives and works in the campus area, so no daily local transportation is needed.

The premises of the voluntary workplace unfortunately are not suitable for volunteers with physical disabilities. If you are an applicant with a sensory disability, please contact Maailmanvaihto at esc@maaimanvaihto.fi for discussing in more detail if a volunteering period could be possible for you.

Lahti: Become a host family for a young volunteer from Uganda

At the end of January, a young volunteer from Uganda called Ben arrived in Lahti through Maailmanvaihto. Now, Maailmanvaihto is looking for a host family for Ben. Would you like to have cultural exchange at home?

Ben will volunteer at the kindergarten for six months, until July 2023. The co-operation aims at advancing intercultural understanding through daily cooperation.

Hosting a young volunteer is a voluntary activity that offers a great opportunity to be of help, gain international experience at home, strengthen language skills, and view one’s own environment from a new perspective.

For the first moments of the volunteering period we have already found a host family for Ben, but we are still looking for a host family for a longer period. We are primarily looking for a host family for the rest of the volunteering period 6th March – 12th July (a little more than 4 months), but it is also possible to act as the host family for a couple of weeks or months.

Who can become a host family? Anyone interested in sharing their daily home living with a new family member and getting to know the young volunteer and their cultural background. The host family offers for the volunteer accommodation and food.

Ben

“Hello, I am Ben and I am from Uganda aged 24 years old. I speak English and Luganda. I am a simple guy who loves getting new friends, experiencing other cultures, and learning new languages. In my free time, I usually watch movies or have a walk. I also like listening to music and playing soccer. In volunteering, I want to learn the Finnish language and about cultures in Finland!”

Who can become a host family? Anyone who is interested in getting to know a new person and their cultural background as well as sharing their daily living with a new family member! The family provides the volunteer with accommodation and daily meals.

Got interested?

Please read more about the host family activities and contact us with an introduction on your family and your motivation to host a volunteer.

Please, send you e-mail to Programme Coordinator Mari Takalo: hosting@maailmanvaihto.fi. If you wish to receive further information via phone, you can reach Mari from the number +358 044 318 0888.

“At least with this experience of two months, I would recommend becoming a host family for all those who wish to see, hear, and experience more. Sometimes a leap to the unknown can be the best action of your life.” – host family member Jaana Silvast

Becoming a Berliner

One very eventful, enriching, and memorable year in Berlin through the European Solidarity Corps programme has come to an end. It’s still difficult to comprehend how fast a year goes by. Before moving to Berlin, I was very much looking forward to stepping out of my comfort zone, getting new experiences, and discovering new skills and passions, which can help me to grow both personally and professionally. When thinking about the past year, I could say that it was beyond my expectations in many ways.

As I had already been involved in the activities of ICYE Finland for several years (e.g., as a board member) and had been an ICYE volunteer in Ghana, I was thrilled that I got the opportunity to dive even deeper into the dimensions of the ICYE network in this vibrant and inspiring city that offers so incredibly much to explore. The international office of the ICYE Federation is responsible for the overall coordination, development, and administration of the voluntary service exchange programme between the Federation’s member organisations located across the world. I was responsible for specific office operations (e.g., issuing insurances, updating the project database and website, answering information requests by e-mail and phone), producing content for social media channels, planning and publishing social media campaigns, and creating newsletters. I also assisted in preparing and organising the biennial ICYE General Assembly with the participation of 60 international visitors from 35 member organisations.

“When thinking about the past year, I could say that it was beyond my expectations in many ways.”

Through this experience, I was able to develop an understanding of a different kind of working culture, reinforce my intercultural communication competence, improve my German language skills, as well as gain insights into the strategic and operational work of an international NGO. It was very interesting for me to follow up closely how the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of EU-funded projects occur. I was also able to increase my knowledge about topics related to intercultural learning, international volunteering, global justice, anti-racism, and diversity. Moreover, I developed skills and competencies in project management, content creation, networking, and event planning. I liked the variety of my work tasks and having the opportunity to largely decide myself, based on my interests, which types of tasks to focus on. I feel like I could make a positive contribution to the growth and development of the ICYE network.

One of the highlights was the ICYE’s General Assembly where I was able to meet many people from our member organisations and connect with them on a deeper level. I would like to say a warm thank you to all my lovely work colleagues for their support, guidance, and encouragement. I’m glad to have been part of such a wonderful and inspiring team.

The excitement of moving to a new city, creating a new daily routine, and learning to be comfortable with discomfort allows you to get in touch with your inner self in a totally different way. Settling in a new environment indeed has its challenges, especially in the beginning but it belongs to the adaptation process, and overcoming all the setbacks gives you the biggest confidence boost – everything can be achievable! To me, living abroad provides a great opportunity to challenge oneself, make new social connections, and build one’s cultural sensitivity, which I believe is also a strong asset in the globalizing world. This experience has helped me to reflect deeper on my career path and strengthened my ability to adapt to different cultural settings even in a fast-paced environment. After spending this one year in Berlin I can now recognize, verbalise and present my skills and weaknesses better. I strongly believe that this experience will support my career objectives and give me the confidence to act professionally in multicultural contexts.

“One of the highlights was the ICYE’s General Assembly where I was able to meet many people from our member organisations and connect with them on a deeper level.”

Leaving Berlin behind causes quite mixed feelings, which above all proves that I truly enjoyed my stay. Saying goodbye to a place you got deeply attached to is never easy but I’m extremely grateful for all the new friendships and gained memories during the past year. This has been a valuable journey full of learning and growing. I’m excited to embrace the new opportunities ahead.

Until next time, dear Berlin!

Fabienne Zogg

Volunteering around the world: ICYE Japan

What can a volunteer do in Japan? Rina Matayoshi from ICYE Japan shares her insights.

Please introduce ICYE Japan – who are you, and where are you located?

In ICYE Japan, we have three permanent staff members: sending coordinator, incoming coordinator, and soon we are welcoming a new sending coordinator in September. In addition, we have 3 part-time staff in charge of other programs and finances. Our office is located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, which is the very center of the central area of Japan. It is really convenient location, you will find literally everything in Tokyo.

Rina, you also work with ICYE. How did you end up working with international volunteering?

Good question! I used to be a teacher at a public elementary school here in Tokyo, but I wasn’t really happy in the work environment. I spent a year abroad studying in South Africa, and that period was very influential and left me with a desire to work for an international organization related to youth and education. So, I threw myself into this world of international volunteering with no experience in volunteering. When I began working, ICYE Japan was in severe financial crisis. I was alone in the office, knowing nothing. However, attending ICYE Federations General Assemblies and other international meetings gave me a chance to meet with experienced staff from all over the world. I learned a lot of things and fell in love with the idea of international volunteering by learning from those people I have been working with.

By learning about the local lifestyle, culture, and people through international volunteer work, you will not only broaden your own world and perspective, but you will also be able to build a cooperative system to make the world a better place by connecting with others.

What an interesting story indeed! What are your work tasks nowadays – and what are the most challenging of them?

Nowadays I am mostly doing management and team-leading. Therefore, the hardest task is trying to predict the future in order to steer the organization towards “right” directions. Luckily, I have been able to create a team that thinks and works together very well. Predicting the future and managing an organization is by no means easy in the unpredictable, uncertain world we are living in but I am sure we can survive and thrive with our core values and adaptive attitude.

What about the most rewarding tasks with your job?

Running and maintaining the organization itself is really rewarding, there are not many international volunteering organizations in Japan. What we are doing is recognized as important, but not many organizations and schools can actually do this. Working for non-governmental organizations is not common in Japan and is often considered an unpaid job. To my mind, running the organization and making us seen as a real workplace makes an important impact to society. And of course, it is always very rewarding and what eye-opening experience they have had during their exchange period.

“What you experience through international volunteer activities will have a great impact on your future. It will give you the knowledge and skills you need to connect across all human differences and build the future of our planet. This is what is required of our generation who will create our own future.”

Speaking of volunteers, what are some issues or aspects of Japanese society that seem to garner interest in volunteers?

Japan doesn’t have a long history of international volunteering, but many people can recognize its core values in relation to other international exchange programs. Our participants often seem to pay attention to international cooperation in the community in poverty or educational field. There is also a growing interest in environmental issues.

What do you think volunteers learn during their exchange?

By learning about the local lifestyle, culture, and people through international volunteer work, you will not only broaden your own world and perspective, but you will also be able to build a cooperative system to make the world a better place by connecting with others.

What would you say to those who think about volunteering abroad?

What you experience through international volunteer activities will have a great impact on your future. It will give you the knowledge and skills you need to connect across all human differences and build the future of our planet. This is what is required of our generation who will create our own future.
